In 1979, the first Magazine of the Year award was presented "posthumously" to New Times, in recognition of its incisive in investigative journalism during its lamentably short lifetime. The nature of the award changed to better reflect the Society's interest in encouraging the birth and growth of new magazines. Starting in 1980 the award recognized "a new (or older, revised) magazine that has shown innovation and excellence within the past five years."
